ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡಿನ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥಾಪಕ ಶ್ರಿ ಎನ್.ಆರ್. ನಾರಾಯಣ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರು ನಾಳೆ ತಮ್ಮ ೬೦ ನೆಯ ಹುಟ್ಟು ಹಬ್ಬವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರ ೫೯,೦೦೦ ಹಿಂಬಾಲಕರು ಅವರ ಶ್ರೇಯಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ನಾಳೆ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕೋರಿ ತಮ್ಮ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ನಾಯಕನನ್ನು  ಹರಸುತ್ತಾರೆ !  ಆ ದಿನವೆ ಅವರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ೨೫ ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕು ಮೇಲ್ಪಟ್ತು ದುಡಿದ ಸಹೋದ್ಯೊಗಿ, ನಂದನ್ ನಿಲೆಕೆಣಿಯವರು ಮುಂದೆ ಇನ್ಫೊಸಿಸ್  ನ ಆಡಳಿತದ ಕಾರ್ಯಭಾರವನ್ನು ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಮುಂದೆ ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಾರಾಯಣ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರು ಕಂಪೆನಿಯ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮೇಲಿನ ಸ್ಥರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ ಸಲಹೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಮಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಸಹಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ! ಇವರೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಸಹಕರಿಸಿ, ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ಯನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಲು ಸಹಾಯಮಾಡಿದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಮರ್ಥ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರ್ ಆದಾಗ್ಯೂ ತೆರೆಯಮರೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದ್ದು ತಮ್ಮ ಮಹಾನ್ ಯೊಗದಾನಮಾಡಿದ ಸುಧಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರಿಗೆ ಯಶಸ್ಸಿನ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಹೊಗಬೇಕು. 'ಇನ್ಫೊಸಿಸ್' ನಾರಾಯಣ ಮೂರ್ತಿ ಹಾಗು ಸುಧಾಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೂಸಾಗಿದ್ದು ,ಈಗ ಪ್ರೌಢತೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಿತ ಸಾಫ್ಟ್ ವೇರ ಕಂಪೆನಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿದೆ.

Introduction

In Part-I of this article we have seen how hacked proprietary font based solutions hampered the growth of Indian language solutions on computers. All these solutions added a layer to the Operating System (OS) and did not gel well with the OS. All over the world computer users have started adapting the 16-bit data-encoding standard called Unicode. Systems that have in-built support for Unicode at the OS level need not have an added layer for Indic support.

So much has been written about the digital divide in India. People have talked tirelessly about the need of taking the benefits of Information Technology (IT) for common man. No one is going to question the validity of the statement “IT for common man has to be in his language”. Many state governments and the central government of India are spending lot of money towards E-Governance. Let us consider the problems and their solutions in implementing the E-Governance projects in India.

Adding multi-language capabilities other than English should be done from ground up. All the code that represents the language to the user (buttons, menus, prompts, help, text, dialog-boxes, etc.) must be found and altered to support language independence. This problem multiplies exponentially when you deal with applications that have hundreds of thousands lines of code, which have been created over the time and modified constantly by different developers. Hard-coding the language dependent text makes it extremely complex the process of adding multilingual capability for the program. One will have to develop individual application for every language he wants to support. Maintaining such a program is another headache.

“ಸಮಯ” ಪದದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಂದು ವಿವೇಚನೆ

ಕನಕದಾಸರು ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಕೃಷ್ಣನನ್ನು `ಬಾಗಿಲನು ತೆರೆದು ಸೇವೆಯನು ಕೊಡು' ಎಂದು ಕಳಕಳಿಯಿಂದ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ, ``ಭಕ್ತರ ಮೊರೆ ಕೇಳಿ ಅವರ ನೆರವಿಗೆ ಬರಲು, `ಇದು ಸರಿಯಾದ ವೇಳೆಯೋ, ಅಲ್ಲವೋ' ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಾ ನೀನು ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಕೂಡಲೇ ಆ ಆರ್ತನಾದಕ್ಕೆ ಓಗೊಡುವೆ" - ಎನ್ನುವ ಭಾವದಲ್ಲಿ, ```ಸಮಯ-ಅಸಮಯ'ವುಂಟೆ, ಭಕ್ತವತ್ಸಲ, ನಿನಗೆ?", ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ `ಸಮಯ' ಎಂಬುದು ನಾವೇ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ, ಆದರೆ, ಮುಟ್ಟಿ ಅನುಭವಿಸಲಾಗದ, ನಮಗೆ ಅತಿ ಆವಶ್ಯಕವಾದ, ಬಾಳಿನುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಇರುವ ನಮ್ಮೊಡನಾಟದ ಒಂದು ವಿಚಿತ್ರ `ವಸ್ತು'! ಏನಿದು ಈ `ಸಮಯ'?

೧. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಜನರು ಆಡುವ ಭಾಷೆ ಯಾವುದು?

ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಜೊತೆ ಜಗಳವಾಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಸಿಟ್ಟಿಗೆದ್ದು ಮೆತ್ತಿ ಹತ್ತಿ ಕೂತಿದ್ದಳು. ಮಗುವೂ ಅವಳ ಜೊತೆಸೇರಿತ್ತು. ಹಾಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ನೆಪಕ್ಕೆ ಪೇಪರ್ ಓದುತ್ತ ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದೆ. ಹೊರಗಡೆ ಇಣುಕಿದರೆ ಆಕಾಶ ಕಪ್ಪು ಮೋಡಗಳಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿ ಹೊರಗೆಲ್ಲೂ ಹೋಗುವುದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಗುಡುಗು ಅಬ್ಬರಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಗಾಗ ಮಿಂಚೂ ಕೋರೈಸಿ ಆಟವಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ನಿರಾಸೆಯಿಂದ ಒಳಬಂದು ಕೂರೋಣ ಎನ್ನುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಳೆಹನಿಗಳು ಒಮ್ಮೆಲೇ ಬೀಳಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದವು. ಮಳೆ ಸುರುವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ವರ್ಷಕಾಲದ ಬಿರುಗಾಳಿಯ ಜತೆಗಿನ ಗಾಢ ಮಳೆ ಚಳಿಯ ನಡುಕವನ್ನೂ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಿತು. ಒಳ ಬಂದು ಸೋಫಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಣ್ಣುಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಕೂತೆ.
